Welcome to the sixth edition of Portrait of Humanity, an annual exhibition celebrating all that unites us in times of division.
In a world often polarised by differences, Portrait of Humanity returns to remind us of the universal human experience. From British Journal of Photography, Portrait of Humanity was launched in 2018 to demonstrate that, across oceans and borders, there is more that unites us than sets us apart.
The sixth edition of the award comprises 30 single images and three series spanning six continents. A powerful portrait of an obstetrician taken by James Clifford Kent captures the resilience of NHS workers. In Moldova, Maria Gutu’s double exposed portrait of local women highlights the importance of ritual and the practices that bind communities together. David Davis’ portrait of a mother who has lost her son brings awareness to the ongoing persecution of the Tamil community in Sri Lanka. These stories serve as a necessary lens on a multitude of experiences from around the globe.
Series winner Seif Kousmate’s mixed-media work, Waha (meaning ‘oasis’ in Arabic), investigates the destruction of natural wetlands in Morocco and the impact their disappearance has on local communities. In the USA, Andrés Mario de Varona’s No More Mud in Our Eyes explores themes of friendship, community, and trust. Meanwhile, in France, Camille Gharbi’s Matres Mundi reinterprets classic European painting with portraits of immigrant women from Africa who run a catering business in the city’s poorest neighbourhoods.
Winning images from this edition of Portrait of Humanity have been exhibited globally, having already been exhibited at Fotofestiwal Łódź in Poland this June, and Four Corners Gallery in London in Septmeber. The 199 shortlisted works have also been published in the Portrait of Humanity Vol. 6 book by Bluecoat Press.
